The United States government is considering banning the hugely popular app TikTok due to security concerns related to the Communist Party of China.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated that TikTok was among a number of social media apps that are the focus of scrutiny amid decling relations between America and China.
Pompeo told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham, that “we’re taking this very seriously.”
He added that: “With respect to Chinese apps on people’s cell phones, I can assure you the United States will get this one right too, Laura. I don’t want to get out in front of the President [Donald Trump], but it’s something we’re looking at.”
The Secretary of State said that people should only be okay with downloading TikTok “if you want your private information in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.” The Communist Party of China rules the country.
The app, which lets users share short-form videos and was downloaded 315 million times in the first quarter of 2020, has international reach and is not controlled solely within China. It is owned by Beijing-based startup ByteDance, which American politicians fear could be forced to “support and cooperate with intelligence work controlled by the Chinese Communist Party.”
However, TikTok has stated that it operates separately from ByteDance, none of its data centers are in China, and its data is not subject to Chinese law. US user data is stored in the United States with a backup in Singapore, according to CNN.
The Indian government recently announced it would ban TikTok and other China-related apps.
