Why Most VPNs are Letting Users Down

VPNs are widely available and are commonly used by everyone from individuals trying to hide their identity, to large corporations who wish to improve privacy and protect their data. VPNs are extremely useful, but the market has changed and evolved in a way that means many VPN providers are not giving users the experience they deserve. Here’s a look at why many VPNs are letting their users down, and an examination of how things could be improved.

    What is a VPN?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. A VPN service gives users a new temporary IP address which means that they are able to hide their real IP address. Because IP addresses are used to track activity and identify a user’s location, the VPN service means that users can cloak that information more easily. This gives them privacy and anonymity. Using a VPN means that your real IP address can’t be hacked, and nobody can track the websites you have visited.

Businesses use them to protect their intranet and allow safe connection between different office sites. Corporate VPNs also allow data encryption and let remote workers access the company’s central servers securely. Individuals use VPNs to protect themselves from hacking, to hide their browsing history, and to allow themselves access to websites that are censored or blocked by location settings. It’s understandable that people want to protect their virtual data and control their online activity record, and they have every right to do so.

    The Problem with VPNs

Finding the best VPN for your particular needs can be difficult, because there are a lot of providers out there and some of them are not offering a high level of service. One reason is that some providers allow themselves to become overloaded by people who are using VPNs for questionable purposes, putting pressure on a service that should protect privacy for the right reasons instead of the wrong ones. This means that getting anything done can be very slow. Ironically, it also means that people are more likely to become the target of law enforcement even though using a VPN is often seen as a way to avoid detection.

Another problem is that cheap, bargain-basement VPN providers are taking advantage of the fact that many people don’t know the true details of what a VPN is or what it’s supposed to do. One result of that is that users find more and more sites are blocked. Again, there’s an irony in the fact that some VPNs are doing the exact opposite of what users want and expect them to do. A final irony is that VPN providers might be tracking your activity even when they are supposedly helping you to avoid tracking by other sources.

    The VPN Solution

Searching for the best VPN can be problematic if you don’t know which service to rely on and can’t find one to suit your budget. The reality is that while cut-price services often slow down connection speed and bring you all kinds of problems that you were trying to avoid, there are options out there that provide an excellent service while still being affordable. Even though there are problems with many VPN services, that doesn’t mean that VPNs should be avoided altogether. VPNs are still extremely useful as long as the service is up to the right standard.
