Breaking Down the Pros and Cons of AI

The question of whether artificial intelligence is a bane or a boon to the future of human existence has been an ongoing debate in recent years. Those in the center of the discussion have valid reasons for the side they stand on, yet many on the outside who are uninformed have difficulty with which side to support.  Therefore, it is important to breakdown the pros and cons of AI as well as understanding what it is, which can be described as creating machines that can think.

Writer Krishna Reddy posted an article where the focus was looking at what are the disadvantages and advantages of AI.  Referring to it as the intelligence of machines, this is complex in nature considering this is a complicated mixture of mathematics, computer science and other types of complex sciences.  The ability to replicate human beings’ cognitive abilities into these machines is accomplished through complex programming.

Pros to Artificial Intelligence

One important aspect of AI can be classified as error reduction.  This means the possibility of coming to a solution that has more of a chance of precision to occur by reducing chances of errors happening.  There are many examples of how this can be used in a variety of studies, such as with exploration of space.

Since error reduction can be used with exploration of space, another aspect of artificial intelligence that is beneficial focuses on difficult exploration.  There are plenty of places here on Earth that needs to be explored, such as the depth of our oceans; machines with this type of thinking can be applied to robots that can survive extreme depths than human beings could.  Also, applying this to robots can be used for the process of fuel exploration and mining that does not endanger the lives of others.

While there are plenty of other examples that can be cited, some other uses for artificial intelligence would be to handle repetitive jobs and medical applications.  Work that can be monotonous in nature can be handled through machine learning since it can multi-task and get the job done faster than human beings.  There are many medical applications for using AI, such as with radiosurgery; robotics is applied with operating on tumors and can assist in the surgery without harming the surrounding tissues.

Cons to Artificial Intelligence

Just as there are advantages with using AI, there are disadvantages as well, such as with high costs.  Being that they are complex machines, maintenance and repairing does not happen at a low price.  Also, the software programs that are used need frequent upgrades to compensate with environment changes as well as for the machines needing to be smarter every day.

Another concern has to do with unemployment and it occurring on a large scale.  The concept is undesirable in any society and individuals with nothing to do can end up applying their creative minds towards destructive use.  Considering the economy requires consumers to purchase merchandise for businesses to thrive, those who are unemployed would not have the buying power needed to maintain businesses in staying open; thus, the economy will suffer.

Other examples deal with being unable to replicate human intelligence nor having original creativity.  Since machines currently lack moral and emotional values, valid judgments concerning what is right or wrong cannot be effectively made.  Regarding having the ability to be creative, it is true that machines can assist with creating and designing; however, they cannot match the power of thinking within the human brain as well as the originality present in a creative mind.

There is no final answer on whether artificial intelligence is completely a positive thing or a negative one.  All that can be done is to break down the pros and cons to AI and decide if using machine learning can help the greater good or become a harbinger of destruction.
