Did ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ Flop?

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

One of the best things about Harry Potter is that it was a movie unlike any of its kind. Not only did it bring in a fabled book character to the screen, but it also did that through a massive series of adventures. It also managed to make actors like Daniel Radcliffe a huge star. But you have to wonder, is Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them doing the same here?

Initial Thoughts

Well, upon seeing the movie this weekend, I have to say that I was quite disappointed with the overall feel and tone. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the movie for what it is, but Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them wants to focus a lot on the established universe instead of being something of its own. It’s not a bad movie for sure, I guess it’s the fact that people were craving for a 9th Harry Potter movie that brought in too many expectations for Fantastic Beasts.

Then there’s the fact that Harry Potter fans are aging. The experience was great for kids, but most of those kids now reached adulthood, so getting their attention would be a lot harder.

How the characters compared

Many of the characters fell flat and they just didn’t get to provide you with the experience and results you wanted from this type of movie. There was something missing from Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, although it’s hard to figure out what. It’s safe to say that people did have some very high expectations to begin with, but all of these were fulfilled in the most interesting and magnificent ways possible.

It’s not fair to compare Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to an established franchise since it wants to create a franchise on its own. However, since this is a part of the Harry Potter universe, it’s hard not to bring in comparisons. It will be very challenging for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them to become a massive franchise as Harry Potter did. This is a rocky start despite the fact that you have everything there. The cast is good, the CGI is amazing and the story is quite nice too. But it’s the way everything is put together and the lack of immersiveness that made Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them fall flat.

Conclusion…

It’s hard to say if there will be a franchise or not after this movie, only ticket sales will dictate that. But one thing is certain, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them doesn’t fully appeal to all Harry Potter fans and that is a true shame. Hopefully more and more people will be able to see it and judge it on their own, but we are definitely going to see more from Fantastic Beasts. It may be a new novel or a set of new movies, that’s hard to say. But I am pretty sure that JK Rowling won’t stop here. The question is whether fans of Harry Potter will look up to a potential new installment or not.
